Cosmetic treatment options

Dental fluorosis occurs when people are exposed to too much fluoride when the permanent teeth are developing. Normally, this is caused by high levels of fluoride in tap water. People with mild dental fluorosis notice white specks or streaks on the teeth. People with significant dental fluorosis have brown streaks or spots on the teeth. Treatment options are available for mild to severe dental fluorosis.

Teeth whitening

Teeth whitening is used to treat mild forms of dental fluorosis. Immediately following the teeth-whitening procedure, the dental fluorosis might appear a brighter white than before. Bleach dehydrates the teeth and makes the fluorosis more noticeable. Once the teeth are rehydrated, the dental fluorosis will be less noticeable. In some cases, it is not noticeable at all after professional whitening.

Composite bonding

Cosmetic bonding is used to cover dental fluorosis stains. A general/family dentist begins the process by preparing the teeth. The dentist uses a conditioning gel to roughen the teeth. This makes it easier for the bonding to attach to the teeth. Then, the dentist bonds the composite resin material to the teeth. The material matches the existing teeth.

Dental veneers

Dental veneers are wafer-thin shells that fit over existing teeth. People choose from composite veneers and porcelain veneers. Composite veneers are applied in a single visit and typically last up to seven years. Dentists can add more composite material if the veneers have slight chips or cracks.

Porcelain veneers are customized in a dental lab. Dentists take impressions of the teeth and send them off to a dental laboratory. The laboratory makes the veneers and sends them back. Porcelain veneers can last for 15 years or longer, but people must take proper care of them. Porcelain can chip or crack when people bite into hard objects, so patients should avoid chewing on ice, biting the nails or grinding the teeth.

Dental crowns

Dental crowns are more invasive than other cosmetic treatment options but can be used to cover up stains from dental fluorosis. Dentists must remove some of the natural tooth structure to fit a dental crown. This weakens the tooth so patients will always need a dental crown to support it. Once the structure is removed, dentists take an impression and have the crown customized. Then it is fit around the tooth. Dental crowns can last for decades.

Get a cosmetic treatment for dental fluorosis

Dental fluorosis can be an embarrassing condition, but you can remove the staining or cover it up with a cosmetic treatment. You can choose from teeth whitening, bonding, veneers or crowns. If you are not sure which option is the right one, talk to your general/family dentist. Your dentist will examine your teeth and help you make a decision.
