Invisalign®: A Cosmetic Dentistry Procedure for All Ages

cosmetic dentistry Fresno, CA

Invisalign clear aligners are commonly used in cosmetic dentistry. It provides a discreet way to straighten teeth and that is something many patients appreciate. Historically, the traditional way to tackle teeth alignment issues has been with the use of braces, but these are highly conspicuous devices that can ruin the aesthetics of the patient's smile.

The visibility of braces has led to many people putting off the treatments they need simply because they do not want to deal with the hassle that comes with them. Fortunately, such people can now get the cosmetic dentistry treatments they need to restore the alignment of their teeth, in a discreet way.

How Invisalign® aligners are used in cosmetic dentistry

Clear braces like Invisalign aligners work using the same principle as metal braces. The appliance applies a constant force on the patient's teeth and, over time, that slowly pushes the person's teeth into a better alignment.

Traditional braces use a combination of brackets and wires to get this done, but things work differently when it comes to Invisalign. Clear aligner trays are rigid, plastic appliances that apply force to teeth when worn. The patient gets a number of trays at the start of their treatment, and each is worn for a period of about two weeks. It is then switched out with another tray that pushes the person's teeth closer to the desired alignment.

Clear aligners like Invisalign need to be worn for at least 20 hours each day for the best results. The aligner can be easily removed when it is time to eat or clean the mouth, and it is recommended that patients do so. Treatment times with clear aligners can be anywhere from six months to two years.

The Invisalign process

Invisalign aligners are quite popular in cosmetic dentistry thanks to the discreet treatments they provide. The process usually starts with a consultation with a dentist. The patient's mouth is evaluated to determine if clear aligners are the way to go. Some severe alignment issues respond better to metal braces.

The dentist will take digital images of the patient's teeth and the information is projected on a screen the dentist uses to design the aligner trays. The patient is shown projections of what their teeth should look like over time. Once both parties are satisfied, the information is sent to a dental lab that makes clear aligners. It can take up to two weeks for the aligner trays to be ready.

Once the trays are made, the patient will go in for another appointment. The dentist will fit the patient with their first set of aligners and educate the person on how to take care of them. The benefits of straightening teeth with Invisalign include:

  • Discreet treatment
  • More comfortable
  • Removable appliances
  • Easy to clean
  • Easier to adjust to
