Situations Where You Will Need Emergency Dental Care

Emergency dental care is necessary for most instances of extreme tooth or gum pain. However, there are some instances in which patients assume emergency dental care is needed when regular care during conventional business hours is the better approach. Below, we explain situations in which emergency dental care is necessary and circumstances in which routine care will suffice.

Cracked, broken or knocked-out teeth

It is easier to crack, break or knock out teeth than most assume. By you suffering a fall or are contacted roughly while playing sports and experience a cracked, broken or knocked-out tooth, meet with an emergency dentist as soon as possible. Do not assume everything is all right merely because you are not in considerable pain. The situation is especially dire if your tooth has been knocked out and is no longer connected to your gums with tissue. Reach out to an emergency dentist right away if this is the case. If the tooth in question is knocked out, do your best to preserve it by placing it in a cup of milk or water. Bring the tooth to the emergency dentist so he or she can reinsert it.

Trauma and bleeding

Emergency dental care will be necessary if you suffer oral trauma and bleeding. Damaged gum tissue, dislodged teeth and any other type of oral injury must be tended to by an emergency dentist right away.

One or several lost fillings

If you lose one or several fillings while eating, playing sports or as a result of a car accident, it might not seem like a legitimate dental emergency. However, immediate attention from a skilled dentist is necessary to minimize pain, reduce the chances of infection and keep the tooth healthy. Furthermore, if the dentin portion of the tooth is exposed for a lengthy period, a root canal will be necessary. It is better to have an emergency dentist to take care of this issue right away, so your oral health is not jeopardized.

A shifted tooth

This is one of the more controversial situations that some argue necessitates emergency dental care. A shifted tooth is one that is out of its traditional alignment. If your tooth has moved, contact your dentist to let him or her know what is going on. If possible, gently push the tooth back to its original space. However, if you feel pain when the shifted tooth is contacted, it will prove difficult to chew and live a normal life. Try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth. If the shifted tooth makes it egregiously challenging to eat or if the pain spreads to nearby teeth or gums, emergency dental care will be necessary.
