Types of Dental Implants
A dental implant is a permanent effective option for replacing a missing tooth. There are many types of implants you can choose from. If you are considering the procedure, you should learn about the different types of implants available. This will help you choose the right one.
Different types of dental implants
Many companies manufacture dental implants and the materials used to create restorations. This increases the chances of an oral surgeon finding an implant that meets the needs of a patient. Dental implants are categorized in different ways either by their shape, size or placement. The two main types of implants are subperiosteal and endosteal.
Endosteal dental implants
This type of implant is surgically placed in the jawbone. Endosteal implants are the most commonly used type of dental implant in dentistry. It is usually used as an alternative for patients with removable dentures and bridges. The two most common types of endosteal implants are blade and cylinder, also known as screw type. After healing and the placement of this implant, an artificial tooth can be placed on it.
Endosteal implants have many parts. The cylinder form is made up of a screw, an abutment and a small cylinder made of ceramic, titanium or polymeric. The blade form may have one or more abutments. This is one of the main differences between them. In both types, the replacement tooth is attached to the abutment.
Subperiosteal dental implants
These dental implants are inserted in the jawbone. These are ideal for patients who lack adequate healthy natural jawbone or are reluctant to undergo procedures that would rebuild it. Bone loss can happen because of many reasons, including calcium deficiencies, thyroid problems and advanced age. The dental implant is placed on the bone, so it is not limited by the amount of bone present or shape.
By opting for this option, a person can avoid bone grafting and speed up the process of getting replacement teeth. These implants also allow for a quick healing process because they are placed on top of the bone. Other implants may need a healing period of a couple of months during which they would fuse to the bone. With these implants, this process is avoidable. However, because of modern improvements in bone grafting, implant design and imaging, these implants are rarely used.
Careful oral hygiene can make a dental implant last longer. Patients should spend adequate time cleaning the implants and making sure the surrounding areas are also clean. This will prevent the risk of gum disease. An oral surgeon may provide a patient with tips on how to keep them clean and healthy and what equipment will be appropriate for the patient to use.
How to make the right choice
The different types of implants serve various purposes. People should choose implants that will meet particular needs. Cleaning them should be prioritized. For more information, talk to your oral surgeon about the procedure and the types of dental implants.
