What You Can You Do If You Are Nervous About the Dentist

There is nothing wrong with being nervous about the dentist. Just about everyone is at least slightly hesitant to visit the dentist for one reason or another. However, if your nervousness about dental treatment causes you to hyperventilate, sweat, experience nightmares or miss an appointment, it is time to make some changes. Follow the tips detailed below, and you will find dental appointments to be much easier.

What to do if feeling nervous about the dentist

Plan the appointment

Patients should take some time to think about how to best approach their dental appointment. Those who are nervous about the dentist find planning for the upcoming appointment well ahead of time makes the experience that much more tolerable. Make ample time to get ready for the dental office visit. Leave well ahead of the appointment to be as relaxed as possible. Leaving at the regular time or attempting to squeeze in the dental appointment during a hectic work schedule will cause more stress and feeling unprepared for the dental analysis, treatment or procedure.

Listen to soothing music

If a patient is nervous about the dentist, they can try listening to classical music or other soothing music prior to the appointment. Put in earbuds, load up a soothing playlist, and let the dentist get to work. The procedure will prove to be less stressful.

Focus on breathing

Breathing exercises might calm the nerves. Inhale deeply for four consecutive seconds. Hold this breath in for an additional four seconds. Exhale for another four straight seconds. Repeat this breathing exercise as often as necessary to calm down.

Speak up

Dentists will certainly appreciate it when their patients let them know about their nervousness. Speak with the dentist before the treatment or procedure. Once the dentist understands that the patient is nervous about the visit, they will do everything possible to provide comfort.

Distractions will help

There are other distractions besides music. If there is a TV in the room, focus on it throughout the entirety of the treatment or procedure. It will also help to shift thoughts to other subject matter. Think about the chores around the house, holiday presents to buy for family or what to make for dinner the rest of the week. Focus on anything but the dental treatment to find that the appointment goes much faster.

Mind your food/drink intake

Do not consume foods high in sugar or caffeine before the appointment. Such foods can make one jittery. Drink chamomile tea or another beverage with soothing properties prior to the dental appointment.
